The game is set in fifteenth-century France, in the Loire Valley, where a handful of local aristocrats battle for dominance of the region. From 2 to 5 players take turns rolling dice and making the necessary decisions to maximize the prosperity of their estates.

There are several development options to choose from each turn: construction, agriculture, research, or trade. Each choice gives a certain number of points and opens up new options for the next turn. The player with the highest score after a limited number of turns wins.
